Is your Classic safe from the effects of Ethanol in fuel?
The EU has issued directives to increase the uptake of renewable fuels throughout Europe as part of the campaign to slow climate change. In addition, air quality concerns have been responsible for progressive reductions in sulphur in heavier fuels such as diesel. The net outcome of these EU directives is the inclusion of bio-Ethanol in petrol, and inclusion of components such as vegetable oils in diesel fuels, in addition to the reduction in sulphur content.

The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs have been monitoring the effects of Ethanol in petrol since 2008, when they began to receive letters detailing problems. Early in 2009, members were asked to report their problems but very few did - however the numbers, and the levels of concern, increased in 2010-11.
A full report from the FBHVC and details following a consultation on Renewable Transport Fuel Obligations with the Department for Transport are available on their website... It makes very concerning reading for Classic Car owners.
The permitted Ethanol content in petrol is to rise from 5% to 10% in 2013.
Ethanol causes damage to engines that were not designed to withstand it... Those most likely to be affected are vehicles ten years old or older, carburettored vehicles and first generation direct spark ignition vehicles should not be fuelled on E10 (10% Ethanol) unless the manufacturer can state the vehicles are compatible with E10. The following problems may be experienced...
Corrosion caused when two dissimilar metals are in contact with an electrolyte, like Ethanol.
Rubber components like fuel hoses, carburettor seals and gaskets, and fuel pump seals may be hardened, dissolved or distorted by contact with Ethanol.
Ethanol holds water very readily and can expose fuel system components and steel gas tanks to rust.
Ethanol dissolves the lining of fibreglass fuel tanks. Eventually, fibreglass tanks dissolve until they fail, leaking fuel.
General corrosion, pitting and rust on metal parts.
The FBHVC would welcome a requirement for suppliers to ensure that fuel blended with Ethanol includes suitable anti-corrosion inhibitors to prevent corrosion in fuel systems of vehicles however; there is no legislation for this as yet.
So what can be done to save your Classic?
One option would be for fuel suppliers to incorporate additives direct at source to protect vehicles from these effects; however it should be remembered that our vehicles use a very small percentage of the total UK fuel sales and it may be difficult for retailers to commercially justify stocking such fuel even if the oil companies will distribute it.
